This is a picture that I found that describes where Elie and his father would have stayed during this time. They talk about the bunks that you see in the picture where people would crowd into one bunk between up to three people sometimes. As you can see the condition of the people staying there is very poor and it looks like they have been there for awhile starving and getting sick. The scenes that it reminds me of is when Elie's father is dying and he is wanting to stay in his bed and rest. It is sad because as he is doing that people is stealing his food and beating him because he is annoying them by calling for his son to get him water and various things. It also gives you more of a visual image on the conditions that the Jews had to live with when they were all stuck living in the concentration camps. It also makes me think of the parts of the book where Elie would describe waking up from there and having to get up and run out for a roll call or going to work and do jobs around the camp. Also all of the people crowded into the bunks all had to be starving obviously, and they are all waiting for their small ration of soup and bread that they get.
